The Philippines is a country brimming with untapped potential, and the engineering talent of its people is no exception. Despite the remnants of a colonial mindset that persist in society, Filipino inventors and engineers have persisted in advancing science and technology to benefit society as a whole. Among the many talented inventors, three stand out for their contributions: Gregorio Zara, Rodolfo B. Biescas Sr., and Diosdado Banatao.

World-Class Engineers
Gregorio Zara is a Filipino engineer and physicist born on March 8, 1902, in Lipa, Batangas. He is credited with inventing the videophone, which is also known as a two-way television-telephone. Zara’s invention allowed people to see each other while talking, a concept that was considered science fiction at the time. In 1955, Zara introduced his videophone to the world and patented it as a “photo phone signal separator network.” Zara was also responsible for creating a number of other inventions, including an airplane engine that used alcohol as fuel, a propeller with adjustable pitch, and a TV camera tube.
Rodolfo B. Biescas Sr. is a Filipino inventor from Bacacay Albay who has created a number of devices to solve everyday problems. His inventions include the IronMate, a device that automatically shuts off when a flat iron is not in use; the Car Ionizer, which neutralizes the air inside a car using negative ions; the Nature’s Air Room Ionizer, which removes airborne contaminants; the SuperFlame Charwood Stove, which utilizes charcoal and wood as fuel; and BricksCoal, a cooking fuel that is steady, odorless, and smokeless. Biescas has won several awards for his inventions and believes in finding solutions to make people’s lives better.
Diosdado Banatao is a Filipino engineer and entrepreneur born on May 23, 1946, in Cagayan Valley. He is considered a pioneer in the field of computer engineering and is known for his contributions to the development of the personal computer. Banatao is responsible for creating the first single-chip 16-bit microprocessor-based calculator in the 1970s. In 1981, he went on to develop the first system logic chip sets in history, which enabled the compact integration of all a computer’s fundamental data processing capabilities. Banatao also developed the first personal computer graphics accelerator chip for Windows. Today, Banatao is regarded as one of the most successful Filipino entrepreneurs, and he is known for his work in venture capital and social entrepreneurship.
The Philippines has played a crucial role in the semiconductor industry since the 1970s, providing the assembling, testing, and packaging requirements of companies such as Texas Instruments and Intel. The semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sectors in the Philippines are critical exporters of cutting-edge technology to consumers worldwide, accounting for 62% of the country’s total exports in 2020. The Philippines ranked 51st out of 131 nations in 2021 in the global innovation index.
